Garden leek "Winner"
Winter Leek "Winner" — Allium porrum L.
A variety with a tender pseudostem (white shaft) reaching 20-25 cm in height. Designed for late autumn harvesting and successfully withstands overwintering in open ground.
Suitable for all types of processing and home cooking.
Agrotechnics: Leeks require well-cultivated, fertile soils. The best predecessors are cabbage, cucumbers, and legumes.
Leeks are grown via seedlings. Seeds are sown in late February – early March, and seedlings are planted out in open ground in late April – early May. Planting is done in furrows 6-10 cm deep, with a row spacing of 25-30 cm and 10-25 cm between plants in the row.
Further care consists of systematic cultivation of row spacing, weeding, watering, and feeding. Important technique: regular "earthing up" (hilling) of the plants ensures a long and tender blanched white stem.
1.0 g = 350-370 seeds.

Did you know that... winter leeks can successfully overwinter right in the garden bed. This provides a unique opportunity to harvest fresh vitamin-rich produce in early spring and early summer.
It is also possible to successfully store fresh leeks until the new harvest by burying them upright in damp sand in a cellar.
Due to its high dry matter content, leek is excellent for drying. To do this, slice the blanched "leg" into rings and dehydrate. It is used in cooking just like regular onions, but with a much more delicate aroma.
